BBQ in New Farm Park

QIBT BBQ at New Farm ParkTo celebrate the end of the 2nd semester and graduating students, QIBT held a free BBQ in picturesque New Farm Park.

We enjoyed the outdoors, played games, and ate food. Some students even threw a Frisbee and played cricket for the first time. One seriously funny game involved racing in pairs holding a balloon between each pair.   It is always great to get involved in student life and the smiles of the participating students were evidence of that.

Students get creative

Race in QIBTGraphic Design students from Jack Oudyn’s course Creating the Image produced some really interesting group work last semester. You can check out Mars, Yao-Hung and Yen-Hsiang’s video ’Race–in-QIBT’  or Naz and Katie’s film ‘Oh my QIBT’  on Youtube.

It’s great to see students working together as well as creating work that they will have with them always as a memento of QIBT.

Interesting facts

>> The sentence “The quick brown fox jumps over a lazy dog” uses every letter of the alphabet.
>> The longest recorded flight of a chicken is 13 seconds.
>> The electric chair was invented by a dentist.
>> Recycling one glass jar, saves enough energy to watch TV for three hours.

Welcome to new students

Welcome to all new QIBT students! We hope you have a positive experience while studying at QIBT. It seems like the addition to the orientation of the speed dating was a great success. Many students also participated in the campus treasure hunt and counting the number of smiling faces they also enjoyed it.

Thank you to all of the mentors, you helped make the students feel more comfortable. The mentors were friendly and helpful to students and they should be proud of their performance. Check out photos from Orientation on our facebook group!

Griffith Sporting Clubs

Griffith University has many sporting clubs that students at QIBT can take advantage of. There is a club for badminton, baseball, basketball, soccer, karate, handball and volleyball.  To join any of these clubs go to this link and follow the instructions.

Take the popular international sport volleyball for example. It only costs $20 for a year membership. Anyone can join and there are sessions every Tuesday night (8pm-10pm) at the Mt Gravatt Sports Centre. It does not matter about your skill level - there will be an opportunity for you to play. If you want to join you can turn up on the night and sign up.

My QIBT by Mamta

As soon as you open the QIBT website it takes you to the section titled as “my QIBT”. Over the past 3 semesters, that is what QIBT became to me. Not just a mere study institution; but a  place I can relate to, a place I know inside out, a place I can proudly call  “my QIBT”.

Spread over 3 semesters my journey at QIBT has been just the best I could ask for. Being a Bioscience student, there always was a kind of hesitance about how the study structure out here would be like as opposed to the conventional university studies or Griffith studies in my case. But, now as I near the end of the QIBT pathway, I am so glad I took this route to study. At QIBT, I got the best of everything! Be it lecturers, tutors, those extra help sessions, small classrooms and more. Not just academically, QIBT gave me so many opportunities to exhibit extra curricular characteristics like leadership, personality development and more.

Ask and you shall get. That is how QIBT has treated me. The building blocks of QIBT, the reception, the administration, academic advisors, welfare advisors and every single department has given all the help you could ask for in my study life here. My first job with mater hospital was proudly in my tenure as a QIBT student which would not have been possible without the support of QIBT advisors. At this stage, I would like to thank everyone for being there for me! For giving me the best of everything!

My old mates who have already graduated from QIBT come here sometimes and when you ask what you are doing here, they will say that we were homesick. That is what studying here means to us. A place that I can will always be happy to be a part of, a place where I got the chance to exhibit and expand my skills, a place where the best was provided to me, a place which knows me and vice versa, a place that made me at home in a foreign country. A place I can proudly call “my QIBT”! Mamta Ketan SHAH

Cultural shock beyond the gates of our country

As many others I am also an overseas student and I am amazed at how many cultural differences exist between people, such as language, dress and traditions, religion their different concepts of religion and morality. Hopefully as a student, I have got the chance to interact and get to know more about others. Sometimes it is hard to adapt, but more than a reaction of psychological disorientation - we have got to open our mind with the purpose of knowing a bit more about the different thoughts and believes from others. This is in order to know more beyond the limits of our countries.

I love QIBT

Monday morning was a sunny day. I believe that Monday morning is the most important time of the week. I wish that lucky feeling could last for longer. However, I missed the campus bus, so I had to walk to M14. I met many new faces on the way and talked to them. They looked excited. That condition evoked memories of mine. I am pretty sure that they will love this place just like me. After I entered the classroom, one of my Indian friends told me that new equipment had been set up in labs - that’s good news for all of us.

I wondered whether the evaluation which I wrote last semester worked? At that minute, I felt intense that I love QIBT more than before. Also, this makes me have more interests to complete the evaluation in this semester. Haha~ Don’t worry, I won’t request anything unreasonable. By the way, I firmly believed this morning is a very lucky morning. Any way, I think QIBT is a good place to study and to even go higher. I love it here.

Finding accommodation

Finding accommodation in a new town or country can often be stressful and time consuming. So here are a few tips to make it easier for you.

Accommodation types & cost
Think carefully about the type of accommodation you want; rental or share and which area you want to live in. Living closer to QIBT, will save money on transport costs. The average price in the Mt Gravatt area for a room in a share house is $140-150 per week. The average price for a rental house is $320-340 per week.

Where can I look?
The best place to look for accommodation of any kind is on the internet. Try www.realestate.com.au or www.sunbrisbane.com. You can also try looking in the real estate section of the Courier Mail on Saturdays, on university noticeboards and the Griffith University website under accommodation.

Share accommodation
Call the advertisement and make an appointment to look at the room. Before you look at the room make a list of questions you want to know about the place. Find out information about what is included in the price and other people you would be sharing with. Remember it is important to feel comfortable and safe with the people you are going to live with.

Rental accommodation
Send the real estate agent an email or ring them up and make an inspection time. Most rental properties have scheduled ‘open for inspection times’ throughout the week. Fill in an application form before you look at the property so that it if you like it you can apply immediately. Real estate application forms can be downloaded from real estate websites such as realestate.com.au.

Paying rent
Remember to always get a receipt for any money you pay for rent, bond, bills, cleaning and keep receipts for everything.

Rental Tenancies Authority (RTA)
The Residential Tenancies Authority (RTA) administers the Act (the rules for renting). The RTA is an independent and impartial government organisation that assists tenants and lessors (landlords)/agents to understand their legal rights and responsibilities as set out by the Act.

Before you rent a room or premises refer to the RTA’s booklet – ‘Renting a home’- A tenant’s guide to the rules for renting in Queensland. Important information can be located at: www.rta.qld.gov.au or call 1300 366 311.
