QIBT hospitality students impress
Delegates from QIBT teaching and management, who attended a lunch at the Metropolitan Institute of TAFE at Alexandra Hills on Friday the 19th of September, were very impressed with both the quality of food and service of the students.
All Hotel Management students get to experience a real life restaurant environment when they study either food production or food and beverage service management. Connections is a training restaurant where students have the opportunity to practice their theory and gain valuable on-the-job skills.
Once a semester QIBT staff attend a lunch at Connections in order to experience student hospitality. Once again the students exceeded expectations in both food and service. All who attended the lunch agree that the service staff were friendly and attentive and we were well looked after. The food was sensational and comparable to a fine dining restaurant.
The menu is a good example of this:
Entrée
Potato & Bacon Soup with Pastry Crust Peperonata & Goats Cheese Tart
Main Course
Vienna Style Chicken Breast Served with Parsley Potato & Glazed Carrots
or
Port Medallion with Potato Rosti & Bean Bundle
Dessert
Caramelised Pear with White Chocolate Mousse
QIBT students are doing a great job in providing quality service and food. Paul Pedrina, the Coordinator for Food and Beverage, gave a glowing report of the students; especially Sam and Koki who had shown leadership skills and great potential.
QIBT’s new look Policy Library
The QIBT Policy & Procedure Library (QPPL) contains lots of information about QIBT, for students and our staff. Ever wondered what QIBT and Griffith do to make sure that your exam is correctly marked? What about your rights and responsibilities? Or lost property? The QPPL can help!
The QPPL has been around for ages, but we heard that students thought it was hard to find the information they wanted to know. So we got some ideas from our students and staff and have put together a revised menu structure which we think is a lot easier to use.
You can check out the new QPPL at http://policies.qibt.qld.edu.au/. The same website can be accessed from the QIBT website (see right) or your student portal under MyInfo>Policy Library. We are always interested to improve the Policy Library, so let us know what you think by emailing sara@qibt.qld.edu.au.
The Student Liaison Committee (SLC) great job – thanks!!
Many of the students on the SLC are graduating this semester and therefore we would like to thank them for doing a fantastic job.
The SLC provides an avenue where current issues affecting students can be discussed, and feedback can be obtained, in order to improve the quality of student life at QIBT. The SLC also aims to foster a sense of community at QIBT.
The student representatives attended meetings and confidently brought issues to the attention of management and teaching staff. The students who were part of the SLC have shown great management potential and we wish them well for the future. We also look forward to more enthusiastic representatives taking part over semester three and beyond.
Other students who made an invaluable contribution this semester include all mentor’s and PAL’s. All staff at QIBT would like to sincerely thank you for the giving of your time.
Movie ticket prize for best article
The idea of the Student Newsletter is to help students become more involved in life at QIBT and in Australia. An aim for future issues is for the students to take an active role in writing and researching their own articles as well as editing the newsletter.
To encourage students to participate in the newsletter QIBT will give away three double passes to the movies. The winning entries will be published in future newsletters.
Article length should be between 100 and 200 words and include a photograph. You could write about a wide range of things including: student life, your experiences and living in Australia.
Send your article to chris.rayner@qibt.qld.edu.au before November 5
Become a member of QIBT’s online community
We may not have a ‘common room’ at QIBT, but online at Facebook we have a vibrant cyber community. Students can share photos, videos, study tips and stay up to date with QIBT student activities and events. Past and future students are also welcome to join, it’s a great way to stay in touch and network with fellow students.
Just search for QIBT under Organizations - Academic Organizations, you will need to be a facebook member to join the group. www.facebook.com

Message from a past student
It was a wonderful choice to enter into QIBT, because it has excellent education systems. The teachers and staff are helpful and open for the students, and the classes are small with a friendly atmosphere, so we can ask at anytime we want.
When I took the Diploma of Commerce at QIBT in 2006, I was very excited to study in Australia. At the same time, I suffered from an inability with English. Especially, writing essays is a big problem for me because it requires writing “logically”. However, I could not understand the notion of “logic” as it is too abstract, so my essays had something wrong even though I rewrote them many times following the teachers’ advice. Ms Lyn Tracey often helped me with my writing.
After I transferred to Griffith University as a second-year Bachelor of Commerce student, the environment was completely changed. More than 200 Accounting students study in the lecture rooms, so the class size became much bigger. Some tutorial classes do not take student attendance, and so many students do not come to the classes. Nonetheless, it means that it is difficult to manage ourselves in the university life. Therefore, many students fail to develop good study habits.
As part of your study plan, I recommend that you should keep up with all lectures every week, and not leave your questions until late. Time management is most important for students because it is impossible to cover all lecture materials just before the exam period. Furthermore, you should ask your tutors every time you have questions. Because of the large number of students and without your positive actions, teachers find it difficult to help with all students’ problems.
I now maintain the same study style that I developed at QIBT, where I received an Academic Excellence Award, which only the top 5% of students receive. I am going to study a Masters program at the Australian National University next year. If you study hard, you can have many wonderful opportunities in your hands. Your future depends on your effort. Good luck, QIBT students!!

Editors note
It has been another hard working semester for QIBT students. Congratulations for getting through all the difficult times and hopefully passing your courses.
I hope that you get something out of reading about what is going on at QIBT. Also, I am looking forward to more student participation in writing and editing articles in coming newsletters. As an incentive to write you could win a double pass to the movies; be brave and send your articles in.
QIBT aims to have a happy student community and as part of that we encourage participation in all areas of life.
